X-13-ARIMA-SEATS

The Census Bureau has announced that the release of X-13-ARIMA-SEATS is scheduled for the end of 2010. This new program contains all of the features of the Census Bureau's X-12-ARIMA and adds the ability to compute ARIMA-model-based seasonal adjustment with an implementation of the program SEATS. X-13 has been developed with assistance from Agustin Maravall at the Bank of Spain.

To keep up with the advances in seasonal adjustment, it is important for producers of seasonally adjusted data to learn about both ARIMA-model-based and X-11-based seasonal adjustment, as well as regARIMA modeling. To this end, I've added two new courses to the list of available courses:

These courses will be available by the end of 2010 when X-13-ARIMA-SEATS is released. These courses may eventually replace some of the other courses, but for now, we will wait until X-13-ARIMA-SEATS is released.

I am so happy to announce that the first on-line course from Catherine Hood Consulting is now in beta-testing.

If you are curious about the format of the courses, please check out the free "Why Seasonal Adjustment" sample course.

Fun facts for July

As you probably already know, July 4th is Independence Day in the United States. But did you know about July's other holidays? July is National Hot Dog Month, National Ice Cream Month, and National Picnic Month. July 14th is La Fete Nationale in France (known as Bastille Day in the United States), and this has led to National French Fries Day on July 13th (though what we call French Fries in the States originated in Belgium).

July is also Anti-boredom Month. As far as I can tell, this "holiday" began in the 1980's. It makes sense. I can imagine some child on his or her summer break from school saying, "I'm bored," and then some Mom or Dad saying, "Let's start an anti-boredom month." To help fight boredom, you could read some quotes to keep yourself entertained. In honor of Anti-boredom Month, I've added some new quotes to my quotation page.

My very favorite quote is from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

"Alice laughed: 'There's no use trying,' she said; 'one can't believe impossible things.'
'I daresay you haven't had much practice,' said the Queen. 'When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.'"
