April 2010

Welcome to the second quarter 2010 newsletter from Catherine Hood Consulting.

New on the web

The redesign for the web pages for Catherine Hood Consulting is up as of March. Thanks to David Joyce for at Exit 42 Design for his programming assistance.

I've added several short papers on the web site as well.

Have you ever wondered what to do if you have a time series that is less than 4 years long (the minimum for X-12-ARIMA and TRAMO/SEATS)? The paper "Seasonal Adjustment for Short Time Series in Excel" will give you the formulas you need to get the job done.

I have also updated the "Getting Started with X-12-ARIMA" papers to reflect the changes in the new version of X-12-ARIMA and the Windows Interface (released by the Census Bureau in December 2009). I've also posted the diagnostics guide.

The U.S. Census Bureau's X-12-ARIMA page has a new look, too. You can check it out at http://www.census.gov/srd/www/x12a/.

The Bank of Spain has updated some links on their English-language page for TSW (TRAMO/SEATS for Windows) at http://www.bde.es/servicio/software/tswe.htm.

Fun fact for April

Did you know April is Mathematics Awareness Month? The theme for 2010 is "Mathematics and Sports." To celebrate this month, visit http://www.mathaware.org/index.html.

Upcoming on-line courses

I have wanted for years to have my seasonal adjustment courses available on-line. This dream is finally close to reality, again thanks to David Joyce at Exit 42 Designs.

The pages are finished for the course "Introduction to Seasonal Adjustment," and the audio is on the way. Sometime this summer, we'll have information about how you can take this course on-line.

If you are curious about the format of the courses, please check out the "Why Seasonal Adjustment" sample course.
